I’m going to start referring to time in BY and AY terms before long. Before Youtube/After YouTube. Who ever could imagine something like a YouTube video would change someone’s life like it has our lives around here.
It certainly happens every day all across the world. One individual or another posts something on YouTube that changes their lives forever. I just never thought I’d meet anyone affected in such a way; much less become one of “those” people. lol
Well, today it’s official. I’ve been drafted! The editors and staff over at ParentingTodaysKids.com reached out to me awhile back and asked me to consider being a regular columnist. I thought about it for a long time, talked to my wife about it, my friends about it, and I’ve decided to take them up on their offer. I have a lot of people that choose to read what I write, for whatever reason. The staff over at ParentingTodaysKids.com has a lot of important things they are trying to do that I support. It seems a natural next step for us to bring the two together.
So, effective today, August 21st, 2012, I can officially add “Columnist” to my ever-growing to-do list. Check out the press release here. I’m also an author, but it took me only a few days to learn the difference between a “published” author and a “successful” author. lol. This will probably be the same. Don’t expect to see my grinning mug making talk-show rounds anytime.
It’s an interesting feeling, to be mentioned in a press release, to see my face on someone else’s website or news portal… I’m usually the one writing them. I’ve never been a subject of one before this all happened. Like so many other things in our lives this year, this is one more thing we’ll adapt to around the house I guess. Hey, I’ll finally justify the cost of that nice new writing-computer I setup upstairs!
Relax! There is no fear of my ego becoming overly inflated. My wife has already trained my daughter to deflate it with pointy objects on a regular basis in the event that my wife can’t be here to do so in person. Otherwise I might starve before figuring a way to get my fat head through the front door of the house!
In case you’re curious, I didn’t write the press release. Do people do that? Write their own press releases? Anyway, it made me smile to read how the editors down there in Florida made me sound much more sophisticated than I am. According to the article, I’m a “seemingly-mild-mannered social media guru.” I’ll take that! Beats the heck out of what some others have called me in recent months!
On a more serious note, the men and women of PTK are dedicated to educating parents and protecting children. Their articles are written by a diverse demographic, of which I am only one voice. Their goal is to be a central place for parents, and even teens, to share ideas, discuss issues important to today’s teens, and to figure out how to be a responsible parent while also being a trusting parent.
I hope you’ll read my articles over on the PTK site. I’m going to shoot for one article a week for now and we’ll see how that goes. I tend to be more verbose than most editors prefer, but the responses from my last article blew them (and me) away. Those of you who commented didn’t just write one-line comments. Some wrote paragraphs and even page-long responses. The editors over there are really excited to see people so engaged in the issues they discuss. So, if you support what they do over there, read it often, subscribe to the site, and comment so they know you’re there. Giving readers something to read is one thing, but it’s only measured in hit-counts on the server. Getting actual responses from readers engaging in a topic gives the other contributors a sense of fulfillment and success. Whether you agree or disagree, I encourage you to spend some time over there and see what they have to say. When you see something you like, share it and comment on it. Tell them/us your thoughts. People are listening!
