My thoughts: Texas Republican Presidential Debate

I’ve just finished watching the debate and haven’t read any commentary or follow-up yet, but just wanted to post my thoughts while they were fresh in my mind. I’ll start with candidates, then a few key issues. FYI: I may update this later to add more content, but here’s the first draft. Trump He was the front-runner coming in to this debate and I think he’ll be the clear winner. Honestly I thought he did HORRIBLE in the SC debate, but apparently I was in the minority. The viewers obviously overwhelmingly disagreed and he won that one. Using the revised court of public opinion as precedent, I think that means he probably nailed everyone else’s coffin shut with this one. Yes, there were the normal Trump moments where he and another candidate went at each other like children, but compared to his other debates I think he did better than … Read the rest…

How Google has changed writing

This is just a side note I want to share with you guys and gals. It’s nothing of any major importance but I felt it interesting enough to want to write about. Writing for me has always been difficult; creative writing I mean. I’m a big one for plots sticking true to real-life whenever possible and scenarios being realistic. It bugs me when I can tell an author has made up a scenario from whole cloth in his mind, yet the physical characteristics of the location don’t really make sense if you listen/read closely.Sometimes if you were to draw it out the way they described it, the building would have five sides. Huh? That’s not a two-story rectangular warehouse… The hard part about the novel I’m working on is that it’s all based on traveling when the grid goes down. I want it to be as true to form as possible … Read the rest…

Chapter 03

“Everyone inside! Now!” My voice was hoarse but the volume and tone made up for it. “Wh-” Jess started to say, but I cut her off, turning and pushing her towards the door. “Now!” I yelled again. Her transformation was instant. Her mother instincts kicked in; spurred by the concern in my voice. She turned and moved for the right patio door she had emerged from just seconds earlier, grabbing every child between her and the door and herding them through it regardless who they belonged to.  Reaching out to grab Matthew’s arm from the side, she dragged him with her as she moved. He stumbled but caught his footing and helped usher his sister and the other kids indoors. “We need to get inside, man,” I said to Michael. “We don’t know what those things are going to do and we don’t need to be out here. There’s nothing … Read the rest…

Chapter 02

July 4th, 2015 – 1300 hrs EST * Six Hours Earlier * I leaned against the Formica bar wiping sweat from my brow and trying to catch my breath. I’m a healthy athletic guy, but endless trips between the truck and third story of this house lugging groceries, coolers, chairs, suitcases and the myriad other items a vacation for twenty people requires will wear out the best of men. That’s my story at least. Being married and going on vacation is a special kind of martyrdom. “Don’t worry about it honey. I’ll get the stuff upstairs,” I said. “Seriously, I got it. You just go enjoy yourself, ok? Try to relax and do whatever it is you want to do, but I’ll handle getting the gear up here.” Why do we do that? I mean, sure, we mean the sentiment, but after the third trip carrying an unwieldy cooler up … Read the rest…

Thing that make you go “hmmm”

Serendipity, Fortuitous, or According to Plan? I am supposed to be working feverishly to update my curriculum vitae in an effort to fulfill a request from the United Kingdom that might, at its conclusion, result in my having the opportunity to revisit Libya and assist with their technological needs – a job I’ve done before under the previous Ghadafi-led government, but the results of which have been partially bombed off the map by the war last year.  The mere fact that this has happened has caused me to pause and reflect.  I, just moments ago, got off the phone with a lady in northern Ireland whom it seems, by mere happenstance, is possessed of the connections necessary to make this happen. Is it amazing? Yes. It is guaranteed? Not at all.  It is merely a conversation at this point; two people of like ideals and common goals trying to find … Read the rest…

How to Raise a Good Dog

As I was preparing this morning to drive to my wife’s clinic to give her a hand with an animal, I looked down at my faithful friend, Bonnie, and saw that “don’t leave me” look in her eyes. She always knows the difference between me going outside to do something and me preparing to leave for an extended period of time. There’s something significant enough in my posture or preparations that she keys in on. Later, as we’re riding down the road together she gave me the “Is it OK if I sit in the front seat?” look that she does when no one else is riding with us. I nodded OK and she happily curled up in the front passenger seat, put her head on her paws in front of the warm vents, and closed her eyes contentedly. That got me thinking about writing this blog post. I get … Read the rest…

Election 2012: The Aftermath

Today I woke up in a world I wasn’t looking forward to; a world that had decided that four more years of the same was the solution to the problems our nation has faced these last four years. I don’t like it, but it’s the world we will be living in for the next four years, so I’m going to get used to it, and I suggest you do the same. I want to share my viewpoint with some of you, especially those hot-headed die-hards out there that won’t ever let it rest. Let’s take a look at the figures. The entire population of the United States is approximately 350 million across all age groups; seniors, adults, teens, and kids. If the figures above are correct, and I have no reason to believe they aren’t, then it changes how I look at things. President Obama pulled in 60,386,002 votes across … Read the rest…

6 Months, Life Changes

I’m going to start referring to time in BY and AY terms before long. Before Youtube/After YouTube. Who ever could imagine something like a YouTube video would change someone’s life like it has our lives around here. It certainly happens every day all across the world. One individual or another posts something on YouTube that changes their lives forever. I just never thought I’d meet anyone affected in such a way; much less become one of “those” people. lol Well, today it’s official. I’ve been drafted! The editors and staff over at ParentingTodaysKids.com reached out to me awhile back and asked me to consider being a regular columnist. I thought about it for a long time, talked to my wife about it, my friends about it, and I’ve decided to take them up on their offer. I have a lot of people that choose to read what I write, for … Read the rest…
